Symptom relief

How can I relieve cold and flu symptoms at home?

Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use over-the-counter pain or fever relief and soothing measures as directed; symptoms ease over several days.

There is no cure for a cold or flu, so home care is about comfort and recovery. Rest gives your body energy to fight the virus, and staying well hydrated with water, warm drinks, or soup helps thin mucus and prevents dehydration, especially with fever.

Over-the-counter pain and fever relievers can ease aches, sore throat, and high temperature when used according to the label. Saline nasal sprays or rinses, steam or humidified air, gargling warm salty water, and honey for a cough (not for infants under one year) can all soothe symptoms. Lozenges may help a sore throat.

Check combination cold and flu products carefully so you do not unintentionally take the same active ingredient twice. If you are unsure what is safe with your other medicines or conditions, ask a pharmacist. See a doctor if you do not improve or you develop warning signs.
