What it is used for
- Localised muscle and joint pain, including osteoarthritis
- Nerve pain such as after shingles or in diabetic nerve damage (specialist patches)
- Back and other persistent localised pain
How it works
Capsaicin, derived from chilli peppers, acts on pain-sensing nerve endings in the skin. With repeated use it reduces a chemical (substance P) the nerves use to signal pain, gradually easing localised and nerve-related pain.
How it is taken
Available as creams, gels and high-strength patches applied by a clinician. Apply it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist or the label directs, usually in a thin layer to the affected area. Wash your hands thoroughly after use, avoid the eyes and broken skin, and do not apply heat to treated areas. Regular use over days to weeks is often needed for benefit.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Burning, stinging or warmth at the application site, especially at first
- Skin redness
- Itching
Serious effects — get help
- Severe or persistent burning, blistering or skin damage
- Serious allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing)
- Coughing or breathing irritation if accidentally inhaled
- Severe eye irritation if it contacts the eyes
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Other topical products applied to the same area
- Heat sources or occlusive dressings, which can intensify the burning
- Generally few whole-body drug interactions because little is absorbed
Who should take care
- Apply only to intact skin and avoid eyes, mouth, nose and broken or irritated skin
- Wash hands well after applying (or use gloves) to avoid spreading it to sensitive areas
- Do not apply heat, tight bandages or take hot baths just after applying, as this worsens burning
- Tell your pharmacist if you have very sensitive skin or an allergy to chilli
- High-strength patches are applied only by healthcare professionals
