Benzoyl peroxide: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Clearasil, PanOxyl, Benzac, Acnecide, Brevoxyl.

Queste informazioni hanno carattere puramente orientativo e non costituiscono un parere medico. Consulta sempre un professionista sanitario qualificato per problemi medici personali. In caso di emergenza, chiama il numero di emergenza locale.

What it is used for

  • Mild to moderate acne
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Inflamed spots and pimples

How it works

Benzoyl peroxide reduces the acne-causing bacteria on the skin and helps clear blocked pores by removing excess dead skin and oil.

How it is taken

Comes as a gel, cream, lotion, face wash or bar. Apply to clean, dry skin over the affected area exactly as the label or your clinician directs, often starting at a lower strength to let the skin adjust. It can bleach hair, towels, bedding and clothing, so let it dry and take care with fabrics.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Dryness, peeling or flaking of the skin
  • Mild burning, stinging or redness
  • Skin feeling tight, especially when starting

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe burning, blistering, swelling or crusting of the skin
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, hives or difficulty breathing

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Other drying or exfoliating skin products (such as strong scrubs or some acids) used at the same time may increase irritation
  • Some topical acne medicines should be applied at separate times of day; check with your pharmacist

Who should take care

  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, nostrils and broken skin
  • Use sun protection, as it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight
  • Be aware it bleaches coloured fabrics and hair
  • If irritation is severe, reduce frequency and ask your pharmacist or clinician

Frequently asked questions

Why is my skin peeling and red?
Some dryness and peeling is common when starting. Easing the frequency and using a non-greasy moisturizer can help; if it is severe, ask your pharmacist or clinician.
How long before I see results?
Acne usually takes several weeks of consistent use to improve. If there is no benefit after the period on the label, seek advice.
Will it really bleach my towels?
Yes. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach coloured fabrics, bedding and hair, so let it dry fully and use white or old towels.
Can I use it with other acne treatments?
Sometimes, but combining strong products can over-irritate the skin. Check with your pharmacist or clinician before layering treatments.
Is Benzoyl peroxide safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
