Hypos awareness

Why do I feel shaky when I'm hungry, and is it low blood sugar?

Shakiness, irritability, and sweating when hungry can be signs of low blood sugar, but in people without diabetes it is usually a normal, mild response. Frequent or severe episodes should be checked by a doctor.

Feeling shaky, sweaty, irritable, or unable to focus when you have not eaten is often linked to a dip in blood sugar. In people without diabetes, the body usually corrects this on its own, and symptoms ease after eating, so an occasional episode is generally not a cause for alarm.

True hypoglycaemia, a measured low, is mainly a concern for people on insulin or certain diabetes tablets. In others, similar feelings can come from skipping meals, caffeine, anxiety, or simply being very hungry.

If you regularly get strong symptoms, episodes that do not improve with eating, or symptoms severe enough to cause confusion or fainting, see a doctor. They can check whether your blood sugar is genuinely low during episodes and look for an underlying cause, rather than you self-diagnosing reactive hypoglycaemia.
