Why am I losing my sex drive?

Low libido in men can come from stress, depression, relationship issues, poor sleep, alcohol, certain medications, or hormonal causes like low testosterone. It is common and often reversible once the cause is found.

Sex drive is influenced by a mix of psychological, hormonal, and physical factors. Common reversible causes include stress, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, poor sleep, excess alcohol, and relationship difficulties. Several medications can lower libido too, including some antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, and finasteride used for the prostate or hair loss.

Physical and hormonal causes include low testosterone, thyroid problems, diabetes, chronic illness, and chronic pain. Because libido is so multifactorial, a single low-desire symptom does not point to one specific cause.

See a doctor if low libido is persistent or distressing, especially if paired with fatigue, erectile problems, or low mood. A clinician can review your medications, check for depression and hormonal or metabolic causes, and suggest targeted help. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own; ask whether an alternative is suitable.
