Some symptoms should never be ignored in pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent tummy pain, a severe headache that won't go away, blurred vision or flashing lights, and sudden swelling of the face, hands, or feet can signal serious conditions such as pre-eclampsia or placental problems.
Reduced or absent baby movements in later pregnancy, leaking of fluid from the vagina, a high temperature, painful or burning urination with feeling unwell, or persistent vomiting also warrant prompt contact with your maternity team.
If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, or heavy bleeding, treat it as an emergency and call your local emergency number. When unsure, it is always better to phone your midwife, doctor, or maternity unit and be checked than to wait at home.
