How often should I get a tetanus booster?

After the primary childhood series, a tetanus booster is generally recommended about every 10 years, or sooner after a dirty or deep wound if your last dose was more than 5 years ago.

Tetanus protection comes from a vaccine usually combined with diphtheria (and sometimes whooping cough). After completing the childhood series, most guidelines suggest a booster roughly every 10 years to maintain immunity.

Wound care changes this timing. If you get a deep, dirty, or puncture wound and your last booster was more than 5 years ago, a doctor may recommend an earlier dose. For high-risk wounds in people who are unvaccinated or unsure of their status, additional protection such as tetanus immunoglobulin may be needed.

Tetanus is rare where vaccination is widespread but can be fatal, so do not ignore wound advice. Seek medical care for any deep or contaminated wound, animal bite, or burn, and bring your vaccination history if you have it. A doctor or nurse can confirm whether you are due.
