Medicine safety

Should I use a syringe or a spoon to give my child medicine?

Always use the syringe or measuring cup that comes with the medicine. Kitchen spoons are inaccurate and a common cause of dosing errors in children.

Accurate measuring is one of the most important parts of giving medicine safely to children. The oral syringe, dropper, or measuring cup supplied with a product is calibrated for that medicine, while ordinary teaspoons and tablespoons vary widely in size and can deliver too much or too little.

Before measuring, check the concentration on the label, because children's liquid medicines come in different strengths, and the same volume of two products can contain very different amounts of active ingredient. Measure at eye level and double-check the number against the dose recommended for your child's weight and age.

For a reluctant child, an oral syringe aimed toward the inside of the cheek often works better than a spoon. If you lose the measuring device, ask a pharmacist for a replacement rather than estimating. Keep all medicines in their original packaging, out of reach, and never refer to medicine as sweets.
