Hair loss

How long does it take for hair to grow back after heavy shedding?

After a temporary shedding episode like telogen effluvium, hair usually regrows over about three to six months once the trigger is resolved, though full recovery can take longer.

Heavy shedding that follows a stressor, known as telogen effluvium, happens when a larger-than-usual number of hairs enter the resting phase and fall out a couple of months after events such as illness, high fever, childbirth, surgery, crash dieting or major stress. The good news is that this type of loss is usually temporary.

Once the underlying trigger has passed or been corrected, the hair follicles generally resume normal growth. Regrowth typically becomes noticeable over three to six months, though it can take longer for hair to return to its previous fullness, and new growth may initially look like short, fine hairs along the hairline.

Addressing contributing factors, such as treating iron deficiency or thyroid problems and ensuring adequate nutrition, supports recovery. See a doctor if shedding continues beyond about six months, if you notice patchy or scarring loss, or if your parting is clearly widening, as this may indicate pattern hair loss or another cause needing assessment. This is general information only.
