Can I drink alcohol while taking ibuprofen?

Small amounts of alcohol with occasional ibuprofen are usually tolerated, but combining them raises the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding, so it is best minimised.

Ibuprofen is an NSAID that can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. Alcohol also irritates the stomach, so taking the two together increases that risk, particularly with regular ibuprofen use or heavier drinking. Both can also affect the kidneys.

For a one-off dose with a single drink, most healthy people will be fine, but if you use ibuprofen often, drink regularly, or have a history of stomach ulcers, reflux, kidney problems, or are taking blood thinners, it is safer to avoid alcohol or choose a different painkiller. Taking ibuprofen with food helps protect the stomach.

Seek urgent care if you notice black or tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or contains blood, severe stomach pain, or signs of dizziness and weakness, as these can indicate internal bleeding.
