What it is used for

  • Chest and respiratory infections
  • Sinus, ear and throat infections
  • Some urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Early Lyme disease in some cases
  • Some infections around the time of surgery

How it works

Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It interferes with the building of the bacterial cell wall so the bacteria cannot survive. It treats bacterial infections and has no effect on viruses.

How it is taken

Comes as tablets, a liquid (oral suspension) and an injection in hospital. Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist directs and follow the label. Tablets are often taken with food for better absorption. Complete the full course as advised.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Frequently asked questions

Why take cefuroxime tablets with food?
Taking the tablets with food helps your body absorb the medicine better. Follow the directions on your label.
Is it safe if I am allergic to penicillin?
There is a small chance of cross-reaction with penicillins. Tell your clinician about any antibiotic allergy before starting.
Can it treat the flu?
No. Flu is caused by a virus, and cefuroxime only works against bacteria.
Can I take antacids with it?
Antacids can reduce how well the tablets are absorbed. Ask your pharmacist about spacing them apart.
