What it is used for
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, including CMV eye disease in people with weakened immunity
- Prevention of CMV disease after organ transplantation
How it works
Valganciclovir is converted in the body into ganciclovir, which blocks the enzyme cytomegalovirus uses to copy its DNA, stopping the virus from multiplying. It is used in people at high risk of serious CMV disease, such as those with weakened immune systems or transplant recipients.
How it is taken
Available as tablets and an oral liquid/suspension. It is taken by mouth, usually with food, and the course can be long for prevention or treatment. Take it exactly as your specialist directs, do not crush or break the tablets, and attend the blood tests your clinician arranges to monitor for side effects.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
