What it is used for
- Supplementing omega-3 fatty acids in people with low dietary intake of oily fish
- Supporting heart and general health as part of a balanced diet
- Used under medical supervision for managing very high blood triglyceride levels
- Supporting nutrition where oily fish is not eaten
How it works
Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are fats found mainly in oily fish. They are building blocks for cell membranes and help regulate inflammation and blood fats such as triglycerides. Supplementing provides these fats when the diet does not supply enough.
How it is taken
Available as capsules, soft gels and liquids, including fish oil, cod liver oil and algae-based vegetarian versions. It is usually taken with food to improve absorption and reduce a fishy aftertaste. Take it exactly as the label or your clinician or pharmacist directs, especially if used for high triglycerides.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Fishy aftertaste or burping
- Mild stomach upset or loose stools
- Bad breath (uncommon)
Serious effects — get help
- Increased bleeding or bruising, especially at high doses or with blood thinners
- Signs of an allergic reaction in people allergic to fish or shellfish
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Blood-thinning medicines and antiplatelet drugs, where bleeding risk may rise
- Some blood pressure medicines
- Cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D, which can add up with other supplements
Who should take care
- Tell your clinician if you take blood thinners or are due to have surgery
- People with fish or shellfish allergy should choose an algae-based product or avoid fish oil
- Do not exceed recommended amounts, particularly with cod liver oil because of its vitamin A content
- Discuss use in pregnancy and breastfeeding with your clinician, choosing a suitable product
