How it works
Fenofibrate helps the body break down and clear triglycerides (a type of fat) from the blood and can modestly raise 'good' HDL cholesterol. This lowers very high triglyceride levels that can otherwise harm the pancreas and arteries.
How it is taken
Usually supplied as oral tablets or capsules, generally taken once a day; some forms are taken with food. Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist directs and as shown on the label, alongside a healthy diet low in fatty and sugary foods.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Tummy upset, nausea or diarrhoea
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Back pain
- Runny or stuffy nose
Serious effects — get help
- Severe, unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine - seek urgent care
- Signs of gallstones or pancreas problems: severe upper tummy pain, especially spreading to the back
- Signs of liver problems: yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness
- Serious allergic or skin reaction: widespread rash, blistering, facial swelling, trouble breathing
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Statins (combined use raises the risk of muscle problems and needs monitoring)
- Blood thinners such as warfarin (effect can be increased - monitoring needed)
- Ciclosporin and some other kidney-affecting medicines
- Certain diabetes medicines
Who should take care
- Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your clinician advises otherwise
- Tell your clinician about any liver, kidney or gallbladder disease
- Report any past muscle disorders
- Mention if you take a statin or a blood thinner
