What it is used for
- Lowering high LDL cholesterol when statins alone are not enough or are not tolerated
- Inherited high-cholesterol conditions (familial hypercholesterolaemia)
- Reducing cardiovascular risk in people with established heart or artery disease
How it works
Evolocumab blocks a protein called PCSK9 that normally breaks down LDL receptors on the liver. With more receptors available, the liver clears more LDL cholesterol from the blood, producing a large fall in 'bad' cholesterol.
How it is taken
Supplied as a liquid in a pre-filled pen or syringe for injection under the skin (tummy, thigh or upper arm), usually every few weeks. People who self-inject are trained by a nurse or pharmacist. Use it exactly as directed, rotate injection sites, and store it as instructed (often refrigerated). It is usually used alongside a statin and a healthy diet.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Redness, pain or bruising at the injection site
- Cold-like symptoms or sore throat
- Back or joint pain
- Headache
- Nausea
Serious effects — get help
- Serious allergic reaction: facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, trouble breathing - seek urgent care
- Severe or persistent injection-site reactions
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Few significant medicine interactions are known; it is commonly combined with statins and ezetimibe
- Always share your full medicine list so your clinician can review your overall plan
Who should take care
- Tell your clinician if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding so the benefits and risks can be discussed
- Tell them about any latex allergy, as some pen caps may contain latex
- Learn correct injection and storage technique from a professional
- Keep using any statin or diet measures your clinician advises alongside it
