Peyronie's Disease: symptoms, causes & treatment

Also known as penile curvature, penile scar tissue.

Overview

Peyronie's disease is the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, leading to a bend, curve, or indentation, usually noticeable during an erection. It can cause pain, deformity, and difficulty with intercourse. It is more common in middle-aged and older men and is benign, not cancer.

Symptoms

  • A new bend, curve, or hourglass shape to the erect penis
  • A firm lump or band of tissue felt under the skin of the penis
  • Pain during erections, especially early in the condition
  • Shortening of the penis
  • Difficulty with erections or with sexual intercourse

Causes & risk factors

  • Scar tissue forming after repeated minor injury to the penis, often during sex
  • Abnormal wound healing in some individuals
  • Connective tissue disorders in some men
  • A family history of the condition
  • Increasing age and certain related health conditions

Treatment & self-care

Mild cases that are not bothersome may simply be monitored, as some improve or stabilize over time. When curvature or pain interferes with intimacy, a clinician may discuss options that can include in-office treatments, injections, or surgery for stable, more severe cases. Because the condition can cause distress, support for emotional wellbeing matters too. A urologist can assess the curve and recommend an approach.

See a doctor urgently if

  • You notice a new curve, lump, or shortening of the penis so it can be assessed
  • Pain or curvature makes intercourse difficult or impossible
  • Symptoms are causing significant anxiety or relationship strain
  • You are unsure whether a penile lump is harmless
