What it is

Detects malaria parasites in your blood, either under a microscope (blood film) or with a rapid diagnostic test (RDT).

Why doctors order it

Fever, chills, headache and body pain — especially after travel to a malaria-risk region — should be tested, not guessed. Confirming malaria before treatment prevents wasted antimalarials and catches other causes of fever.
