Nystatin: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Nystan, Mycostatin, Nystatin.

What it is used for

  • Oral thrush (oral candidiasis)
  • Candida infections of the mouth, throat, and gut
  • Fungal skin and nappy rashes
  • Prevention of thrush in at-risk infants and adults

How it works

Nystatin binds to the membrane of Candida and other yeasts, poking holes that cause the fungal cell to leak and die. When taken by mouth as a liquid it mainly acts on the lining of the mouth and gut and is barely absorbed into the bloodstream, so it works locally.

How it is taken

Comes as an oral liquid/suspension, pastilles, and skin creams or ointments. The oral liquid is usually swirled around the mouth and then swallowed to treat thrush in the mouth and gut. Use it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist, or label directs, ideally after food, and continue for the full course, usually a few days beyond symptom relief.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Mild nausea
  • Stomach upset or diarrhoea with higher oral doses
  • Unpleasant taste
  • Mild skin irritation with the cream

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) is rare
  • Severe or persistent diarrhoea or vomiting
  • Worsening or spreading infection despite treatment

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Very few interactions because little is absorbed into the body
  • Tell your clinician about other treatments you are using for thrush

Who should take care

  • Hold the oral liquid in the mouth as directed before swallowing for the best effect
  • Continue for the full course even after symptoms clear
  • Generally considered suitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but check with your clinician
  • Tell your doctor if symptoms do not improve, as the cause may need review

Frequently asked questions

How should I take the oral liquid?
Usually you swirl it around your mouth to coat the affected areas, then swallow, ideally after food and after brushing teeth. Follow your label or pharmacist's instructions.
Does nystatin get into my blood?
Very little is absorbed when taken by mouth, so it mainly works on the mouth and gut. This is why it has few interactions and is often used in infants.
Can babies use it?
It is commonly used for oral thrush in infants under medical guidance. Follow the dose and instructions from your clinician.
How long should I keep using it?
Continue for the full course, usually a few days after symptoms clear, so the infection does not return. Ask your clinician if unsure.
Is Nystatin safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
