Can I take probiotics while on antibiotics?

Probiotics are generally safe and may reduce antibiotic-related diarrhoea for some people, but evidence is mixed; ask your pharmacist, especially if immunocompromised.

Antibiotics disturb the balance of gut bacteria, and some people use probiotics (in supplements or foods like live yoghurt) to help. Research suggests probiotics may lower the chance of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in some situations, though results vary by product and person.

If you choose to use them, taking the probiotic a couple of hours apart from the antibiotic is a common approach. They are not a substitute for taking your antibiotic correctly.

Most healthy people tolerate probiotics well, but if you have a weakened immune system, a serious illness, or a central line, check with your clinician first, as probiotics are not appropriate for everyone.
