Terbinafine: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Lamisil AT, Lamisil cream.

Esta información es solo orientativa de carácter general y no constituye un consejo médico. Consulta siempre a un profesional sanitario cualificado para cualquier asunto médico personal. En caso de emergencia, llama al número de emergencias de tu zona.

What it is used for

  • Athlete's foot
  • Jock itch (tinea cruris)
  • Ringworm of the body
  • Fungal skin infections

How it works

Terbinafine stops fungi from making a substance they need to build their cell walls, killing the fungus and clearing the infection.

How it is taken

Available as a cream, gel, spray or solution for the skin. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and a little of the surrounding skin exactly as the label or your clinician directs, after washing and drying the area. Complete the full course even if the skin looks better. (Terbinafine tablets are a separate prescription medicine for nail and severe infections.)

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Mild burning, stinging or itching at the site
  • Redness, dryness or peeling of the treated skin

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe irritation, blistering or swelling
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as widespread rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Other topical products on the same area used at the same time

Who should take care

  • Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before use
  • Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse with water if it gets in
  • See a clinician if there is no improvement within the time stated on the label
  • Nail and scalp fungal infections usually need oral treatment, not the cream alone

Frequently asked questions

Is the cream the same as terbinafine tablets?
No. The cream treats skin infections; the tablets are a stronger prescription medicine for nail and more extensive fungal infections and carry different risks.
How long do I use the cream?
Athlete's foot and ringworm need a full course, often around one to a few weeks depending on the product. Follow the label and finish the course.
Can I use it on my nails?
Nail fungus usually does not respond well to creams and often needs oral treatment. See a clinician for infected nails.
Why keep applying after it looks healed?
Fungus can linger after symptoms fade. Completing the course reduces the chance the infection comes back.
Is Terbinafine safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
