Ketoconazole: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Nizoral, Daktarin Gold, Ketozole.

Esta información es solo orientativa de carácter general y no constituye un consejo médico. Consulta siempre a un profesional sanitario cualificado para cualquier asunto médico personal. En caso de emergencia, llama al número de emergencias de tu zona.

What it is used for

  • Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Fungal skin infections
  • Pityriasis versicolor (a patchy fungal skin discolouration)

How it works

Ketoconazole damages the cell membrane of fungi and yeasts, stopping their growth and reducing the flaking, redness and itching they cause.

How it is taken

Available as a medicated shampoo and as a skin cream. Use the shampoo on the scalp and the cream on the skin exactly as the label or your clinician directs, leaving the shampoo on for the stated time before rinsing. Keep using it for the full recommended period to clear and control the condition.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Mild itching, burning or stinging at the site
  • Dryness or, with the shampoo, changes in hair texture
  • Mild redness of the treated skin

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe scalp or skin irritation, blistering or swelling
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, widespread rash or difficulty breathing

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Other medicated shampoos or strong topical products used together may increase irritation

Who should take care

  • Avoid getting the shampoo or cream in the eyes; rinse well if you do
  • Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Seek advice if dandruff, scaling or a rash does not improve within the time on the label

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use the shampoo?
It is usually used a set number of times per week for an initial period, then less often to keep symptoms away. Follow the label or your clinician's guidance.
Can it fix seborrhoeic dermatitis for good?
It controls rather than permanently cures the condition, which can come back. Many people use it occasionally to keep flares away.
Is the cream the same as antifungal tablets?
No. Topical ketoconazole acts on the skin surface; oral antifungals are different medicines with different uses and risks.
Will it change my hair?
The shampoo can occasionally make hair feel dry or alter its texture. This usually settles after stopping.
Is Ketoconazole safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
