How long is too long for a child's fever?

Most viral fevers settle within a few days. See a doctor if a fever lasts more than about 5 days, keeps returning, or your child becomes more unwell.

A typical viral fever in a child often peaks over the first day or two and gradually improves within three to five days as the body fights the infection. The duration alone is one factor, but how your child looks and behaves over that time matters just as much.

Arrange a doctor's review if a fever lasts longer than about 5 days, settles and then returns, is accompanied by a rash, ongoing pain, breathing problems, or refusal to drink, or if your child seems to be getting worse rather than better. A persistent fever can sometimes point to an infection that needs treatment or further investigation.

Seek urgent care at any point, regardless of how many days have passed, if red-flag signs appear: difficulty breathing, a non-fading rash, a stiff neck, extreme drowsiness, seizures, or signs of dehydration. And remember that any fever in a baby under 3 months should be checked promptly without waiting.
