Many multi-symptom cold and flu products contain paracetamol as one of their ingredients, often alongside a decongestant and sometimes a cough suppressant. If you take a separate paracetamol tablet at the same time, you can unknowingly exceed the safe daily limit, which can cause serious liver damage.
Always read the active ingredients on every product you take. If your cold and flu remedy already includes paracetamol, do not add more paracetamol from another source. If it does not, you may be able to add paracetamol, but check the label or ask a pharmacist first.
Stay within the maximum daily dose across all products combined. Seek urgent care if you suspect you have taken too much paracetamol, even if you feel well, as the effects on the liver can be delayed.
