Most colds are caused by viruses and get better on their own with rest, fluids, and time. For fever or aches, paracetamol is generally the preferred medicine in pregnancy when something is needed. Steam inhalation, saline nasal drops, honey and warm drinks for a sore throat or cough, and adequate rest can ease symptoms without medication.
Many over-the-counter cold and flu products combine several ingredients, including decongestants that are often not recommended in pregnancy, so avoid all-in-one remedies unless a pharmacist confirms they are suitable. Always check with a pharmacist before buying anything.
Flu can be more serious in pregnancy. If you have a high fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or feel very unwell, contact a doctor promptly, as antiviral treatment or the flu vaccine may be relevant. The flu vaccine is recommended in pregnancy in many countries.
