What it is used for

How it works

Oseltamivir blocks an enzyme (neuraminidase) that the influenza virus needs to spread from one cell to another. By limiting this spread, it can shorten the illness and reduce the severity of symptoms when started early. It works against influenza viruses, not against colds or other respiratory viruses.

How it is taken

Comes as capsules and an oral liquid/suspension. For treatment it works best when started within the first day or two of flu symptoms; it can also be used preventively after close contact with someone who has flu. Take it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist, or label directs, and finish the full course. Taking it with food may reduce stomach upset.

  • Difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat

Interactions to watch

  • Live attenuated (nasal spray) flu vaccine may be less effective if given close to oseltamivir
  • Few significant drug interactions overall
  • Tell your clinician about all your medicines and any recent vaccinations

  • Caregivers should watch children and teenagers for unusual behaviour
  • Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding on clinical advice; it is often considered when flu risk is high
