What it is used for
- Constipation
- Faecal impaction (hardened stool that is hard to pass), under guidance
- Bowel preparation before some procedures (specific high-volume products)
How it works
Macrogol holds water in the bowel so that stools become softer and bulkier and are easier to pass. It is not absorbed and works gently by softening and increasing stool volume.
How it is taken
Comes as a powder in sachets that is dissolved in water, and as ready-made liquids. It is taken by mouth. Take it exactly as the label or your clinician directs, dissolving each dose in the stated amount of water and keeping up your fluid intake.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Bloating and wind
- Mild stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Loose stools if too much is taken
Serious effects — get help
- Severe diarrhea with dehydration or salt imbalance
- Severe abdominal pain, swelling, or vomiting (possible blockage)
- Signs of significant dehydration
- Allergic reaction (rare)
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- May affect absorption of some other medicines if taken at the same time — separate timing if advised
- Few major interactions otherwise
Who should take care
- Avoid if you have a suspected bowel blockage or certain serious bowel conditions
- Drink enough fluid with it
- Tell your clinician about heart or kidney problems, especially with high-volume products
- Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with a pharmacist
- Seek review if constipation persists or you have severe symptoms
