Feeling better is not the same as being cured. Symptoms often improve before the infection is fully cleared, and stopping treatment early can leave behind surviving bacteria. This can cause the infection to come back, lead to complications, and contribute to antibiotic resistance that makes future infections harder to treat.
This is especially important for STIs like gonorrhoea, where resistant strains are an active concern. Following the exact dose and duration your clinician prescribes gives the treatment the best chance of fully working.
Alongside finishing the course, avoid sex until treatment is complete and your clinician says it's safe, make sure partners are treated, and attend any follow-up or 'test of cure' appointment if advised. If you experience side effects or have trouble completing the course, contact a licensed doctor or pharmacist rather than simply stopping - they can advise on alternatives.
