Metronidazole: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Flagyl, Metrogel, Rozex, Metrocream.

What it is used for

  • Certain dental and gum infections
  • Some gut and abdominal infections
  • Bacterial vaginosis and some other vaginal infections
  • Some skin infections, including rosacea (as a gel or cream)
  • Certain parasite infections such as giardiasis
  • Some infections after surgery

How it works

Metronidazole works against certain bacteria that grow without oxygen and against some parasites. It damages the genetic material inside these organisms so they cannot survive. It does not work against ordinary viruses or all types of bacteria.

How it is taken

Comes as tablets, a liquid, a vaginal gel, a skin gel or cream, and an injection in hospital. Take or use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist directs and follow the label. Swallow tablets with water, often with or after food. Complete the course as advised.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I drink alcohol with metronidazole?
Combining it with alcohol can cause an unpleasant reaction with flushing, nausea, vomiting and a fast heartbeat. Avoid alcohol while taking it and for the period your clinician advises afterwards.
Why does it give me a metallic taste?
A metallic or unusual taste is a common and harmless side effect that usually goes away after you finish the course.
Is dark urine a problem?
Metronidazole can harmlessly darken urine in some people. If you have other concerning symptoms, contact your clinician.
Does it treat thrush?
No. It treats bacterial vaginosis and certain other infections, not the yeast infection thrush. Your clinician will choose the right treatment after assessing you.
Is Metronidazole safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
