Is it normal to have a fever with a cold?

A mild fever can occur with a cold, especially in children, but a high or prolonged fever points more toward flu or another infection.

Adults with a common cold often have no fever or only a slightly raised temperature. Children are more likely than adults to run a mild fever with a cold. A low-grade temperature for a day or two as part of a cold is generally not a concern on its own.

A high fever, a fever that lasts more than a few days, or one that returns after settling is more typical of influenza or suggests a possible complication such as a chest or sinus infection, and warrants closer attention.

Manage fever with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter fever reducers as directed if you feel uncomfortable. Seek medical advice for a high or persistent fever, a fever with breathing difficulty, stiff neck, rash, confusion, or a fever in a very young infant, which always needs prompt assessment.
