Common, contagious, and treatable
Fungal skin infections are everywhere and nothing to be embarrassed about. They thrive in warm, moist areas and spread through skin contact, shared towels, and damp floors. The good news is they're usually straightforward to identify and treat, and a few simple habits stop them coming back.
Know the main types
- Ringworm (tinea corporis): a red, scaly, often ring-shaped patch with a clearer centre, despite the name there's no worm involved
- Athlete's foot (tinea pedis): itchy, flaky, cracked skin between the toes
- Jock itch (tinea cruris): an itchy red rash in the groin and inner thighs
- Fungal nail infections: thickened, discoloured, crumbly nails, often slow to clear
- Yeast-related rashes in skin folds, common in warm, humid conditions
It can spread around your own body
Athlete's foot can spread to the groin or hands, often via a towel. Dry your feet last and use separate towels for affected areas.
Treating mild infections
Many mild fungal infections respond to over-the-counter antifungal creams, sprays, or powders. The key is using them correctly and for long enough.
- Wash and thoroughly dry the area before applying
- Apply the antifungal as directed, extending slightly beyond the visible edge
- Keep using it for the full recommended duration, even after it looks better, to prevent recurrence
- Don't share towels, and wash bedding and clothing in contact with the area
Preventing recurrence
- Keep skin dry, especially feet, groin, and skin folds
- Wear breathable fabrics and change out of sweaty clothes promptly
- Wear flip-flops in communal showers and changing rooms
- Don't share towels, shoes, or socks
- Treat athlete's foot promptly to stop it spreading
When to see a doctor
Some infections need prescription-strength treatment. See a clinician if an infection doesn't improve after a couple of weeks of over-the-counter treatment, keeps coming back, is widespread, affects the scalp or nails, or if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system. Scalp and nail fungal infections in particular often need oral antifungal medication, which must be prescribed and monitored by a clinician, not self-sourced.
Signs that need prompt care
Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, or fever can signal a bacterial infection on top of the fungal one and needs prompt medical attention. In an emergency call 911 (US/CA), 999 (UK), or 112 (EU).
