Staying active in pregnancy is generally encouraged for most people. Moderate activities such as walking, swimming, stationary cycling, and prenatal yoga can help with energy, mood, sleep, and reducing some discomforts. Pelvic floor exercises are also commonly recommended.
A good rule of thumb is to be able to hold a conversation while exercising. Avoid activities with a high fall or collision risk, lying flat on your back for long periods later in pregnancy, and getting overheated. Stay hydrated and don't push to exhaustion.
Stop and seek advice if you have vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, dizziness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, calf pain or swelling, or regular painful contractions. If you have pregnancy complications, a heart or lung condition, or were advised to limit activity, get personalised guidance from your doctor before exercising.
