Nausea and vomiting, often called morning sickness though it can occur any time of day, are very common in early pregnancy and usually ease by the second trimester. Helpful strategies include eating small, frequent meals, having plain crackers before getting up, sipping fluids regularly, avoiding strong smells, and getting rest. Some people find ginger helpful.
If simple measures aren't enough, your doctor can discuss anti-sickness options that are considered suitable in pregnancy. Do not start prescription anti-nausea medicines on your own.
Seek medical help if you cannot keep any food or fluids down, are passing very little dark urine, are losing weight, or feel very weak or dizzy. This can be a severe form called hyperemesis gravidarum, which sometimes needs treatment or hospital care for dehydration.
