Recovery and prognosis

How long does lower back pain take to heal?

Most acute lower back pain improves significantly within 2 to 6 weeks. If pain lasts beyond 6 weeks or keeps returning, see a doctor.

Acute non-specific lower back pain, the most common type, usually starts to ease within a few days and resolves substantially over 2 to 6 weeks. Staying gently active and avoiding prolonged bed rest generally speeds recovery, while complete rest can slow it.

Pain that persists beyond about 12 weeks is called chronic back pain and may need a more structured plan including physiotherapy, exercise, and sometimes imaging or specialist input. Recurrences are common; many people have more than one episode in their lifetime, which does not necessarily mean anything is seriously wrong.

See a doctor if pain is not improving after a few weeks, is getting worse, spreads down a leg, or is accompanied by any red-flag symptoms such as fever, numbness in the groin, or loss of bladder control. A clinician can confirm the likely cause and tailor treatment, and a pharmacist can advise on suitable over-the-counter pain relief.
