Hair loss

Does minoxidil work for hair loss?

Minoxidil can help slow thinning and regrow some hair in pattern hair loss for many people, but results take months, vary between individuals, and stop if you discontinue it.

This information is for general guidance only and does not constitute medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for personal medical concerns. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Minoxidil is a widely used over-the-counter treatment for pattern (genetic) hair loss. For many people it can reduce shedding and produce some regrowth, working best on areas that are thinning rather than completely bald and when started earlier. It does not work for everyone, and the degree of benefit varies.

It usually takes several months of consistent daily use to see results, and some people notice increased shedding in the first weeks before improvement. Importantly, any benefit is maintained only while you keep using it; stopping generally leads to gradual loss of the regrown hair.

Because hair loss has many causes, it is worth confirming the diagnosis with a doctor or pharmacist before starting, and discussing suitability if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have heart or scalp conditions. Follow the product instructions and seek advice if you get significant scalp irritation or unwanted facial hair. This is general information, not a personalised recommendation.
