Can I drink alcohol while taking naproxen?

It is best to limit or avoid alcohol with naproxen, as both irritate the stomach and the combination increases the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.

This information is for general guidance only and does not constitute medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for personal medical concerns. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Naproxen is an NSAID that can irritate the stomach lining and, with regular use, raise the risk of ulcers and bleeding. Alcohol independently irritates the stomach, so combining the two increases that risk, particularly with longer courses, higher doses, or heavier drinking. Both can also affect the kidneys.

An occasional single drink with an occasional dose is usually tolerated by healthy people, but if you take naproxen regularly, drink frequently, are older, or have a history of stomach problems or take blood thinners, it is safer to avoid alcohol. Taking naproxen with food helps protect the stomach.

Seek urgent care for black or tarry stools, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, severe stomach pain, or sudden weakness and dizziness, which can indicate internal bleeding.
