What it is used for
- Asthma (regular prevention) — inhaled form
- Reducing airway inflammation
- Hay fever and persistent allergic rhinitis — nasal spray form
- Nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose from allergy
How it works
Budesonide is a steroid that reduces inflammation in the airways or nasal lining. Taken regularly, it calms swelling and sensitivity, helping prevent asthma symptoms or ongoing nasal allergy symptoms.
How it is taken
Available as an inhaler (preventer, sometimes combined with a long-acting reliever), a nebuliser solution, and a nasal spray. These are used regularly rather than for instant relief. Use it exactly as your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist directs, and rinse your mouth after inhaler use.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Oral thrush, hoarse voice, sore throat (inhaler)
- Dry or irritated nose, mild nosebleeds (nasal spray)
- Cough or throat irritation
- Headache
- Unpleasant taste
Serious effects — get help
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling, breathing difficulty)
- Eye problems such as blurred vision (rare, with long-term use)
- Repeated or heavy nosebleeds
- Symptoms of adrenal effects with high long-term doses — discuss with your clinician
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
