Sleep

Why do I keep waking up in the middle of the night?

Waking in the night is often caused by stress or anxiety, alcohol, caffeine, an irregular routine, needing the toilet, or conditions like sleep apnoea. Occasional waking is normal, but frequent disruption is worth investigating.

It is normal to wake briefly several times a night, usually without remembering it. The problem is when you wake fully and struggle to get back to sleep. Common causes include stress and anxiety, which can cause early-morning waking with a racing mind, as well as alcohol, which fragments sleep in the second half of the night, and caffeine. Needing to pass urine, a warm or noisy bedroom, and an irregular sleep schedule also contribute.

Depression classically causes waking earlier than intended and being unable to return to sleep. Medical conditions such as sleep apnoea, where breathing pauses during sleep, restless legs, pain, hormonal changes, and acid reflux can also wake you repeatedly.

If waking is occasional, improving sleep habits, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and keeping a consistent routine often helps. Avoid checking the clock or your phone, which increases alertness. If you wake most nights, feel unrefreshed, snore loudly, or wake gasping, see a doctor to look for an underlying cause and discuss treatment such as CBT for insomnia.
