Neurological red flags

When is dizziness or fainting something to worry about?

Seek urgent care if fainting comes with chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, or happens during exercise, or if dizziness comes with slurred speech, weakness, double vision, or a severe headache. These may signal a heart or brain problem.

Brief lightheadedness when standing up quickly or after a hot bath is usually harmless. Fainting and dizziness become concerning when they suggest a heart or brain problem. Seek urgent care if you faint during exercise or while lying down, faint with no warning, or have fainting along with chest pain, palpitations, or breathlessness, as these can indicate a dangerous heart rhythm or other cardiac cause.

Dizziness combined with stroke-type signs, such as slurred speech, facial droop, weakness or numbness, double vision, difficulty walking, or a sudden severe headache, is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention. Fainting after a head injury, with significant bleeding, or in someone who remains confused afterward also needs prompt assessment.

Recurrent dizziness, vertigo, or fainting without these red flags should still be reviewed by a doctor to find the cause and prevent injury, but it is less immediately urgent. When fainting is sudden, unexplained, exercise-related, or paired with cardiac or neurological symptoms, treat it as an emergency.
