Self-care

How do I treat a sprain at home with the RICE method?

For the first 48 to 72 hours, use RICE: Rest the injury, Ice it for short periods, Compress with a bandage, and Elevate it above heart level when possible.

RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, and it is the standard early self-care for mild sprains and strains. Rest means avoiding activities that cause pain, though gentle movement within comfort can begin after the first day or two. Ice should be wrapped in a cloth (never applied directly to skin) and used for around 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

Compression with an elastic bandage helps limit swelling, but it should be snug, not tight enough to cause numbness, tingling, or increased pain. Elevation above the level of the heart, when practical, also reduces swelling. Many clinicians now also emphasise gradually loading and moving the joint once the acute phase passes, rather than prolonged immobilisation.

Avoid heat, alcohol, and vigorous massage in the first 48 hours, as these can worsen swelling. See a doctor if you cannot put weight on the limb, the joint is unstable or deformed, pain is severe, or there is no improvement within a few days. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief.
