Food allergy

How long after eating does an allergic reaction start?

Most food allergy reactions begin within minutes to two hours of eating the food. Severe reactions usually start quickly. Some delayed reactions can take longer, so see a doctor if you are unsure.

Classic, immediate (IgE-mediated) food allergy reactions typically begin within minutes and almost always within two hours of eating the trigger food. The faster a reaction starts, the more likely it is to be serious, so a reaction that begins within minutes deserves close attention and readiness to act if breathing or circulation are affected.

Not all food-related reactions are immediate. Some conditions cause delayed symptoms hours later, such as certain gut reactions in infants, or a reaction to red meat linked to a tick bite that can appear several hours after eating. These are less common and harder to spot because the link to food is not obvious.

If you have had a reaction, note exactly what you ate, how long afterwards symptoms began, and what they were, as this helps a doctor work out the cause. Seek emergency care immediately for any breathing difficulty, throat tightness, widespread hives, swelling, or faintness. For milder or delayed symptoms, book an appointment with a doctor who can arrange appropriate allergy testing.
