Mast cell stabiliser (anti-allergy preventer)

Sodium Cromoglicate: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Opticrom, Intal, Nalcrom, Rynacrom, Nasalcrom.

Ces informations sont fournies à titre indicatif uniquement et ne constituent pas un avis médical. Consultez toujours un professionnel de santé qualifié pour toute préoccupation médicale personnelle. En cas d'urgence, appelez votre numéro d'urgence local.

What it is used for

  • Allergic eye symptoms — itchy, red, watery eyes (eye drops)
  • Hay fever and allergic rhinitis (nasal spray)
  • Preventing asthma symptoms (inhaler, less commonly used now)
  • Preventing allergy symptoms before exposure to triggers

How it works

Sodium cromoglicate stabilises mast cells, the cells that release histamine and other chemicals during an allergic reaction. By preventing this release, it stops allergy symptoms before they start, so it works best used regularly.

How it is taken

Available as eye drops, a nasal spray, and an inhaler, plus oral capsules for certain conditions. It is used regularly for prevention rather than for instant relief, and may need several days to take full effect. Use it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist, or the label directs.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Temporary stinging or burning in the eyes (drops)
  • Nasal irritation or sneezing (spray)
  • Throat irritation or cough (inhaler)
  • Unpleasant taste

Serious effects — get help

  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling, breathing difficulty)
  • Wheeze or breathing difficulty after using the inhaler
  • Severe eye pain or vision changes

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Generally few significant interactions, but tell your clinician about all your medicines
  • Other eye drops (separate them by a few minutes if using more than one)

Who should take care

  • Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Use it regularly for it to work — it prevents rather than relieves symptoms
  • Remove soft contact lenses before using the eye drops unless advised otherwise
  • Allow a few days of regular use before judging whether it helps

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't it relieve my symptoms straight away?
It works by preventing the release of allergy chemicals, so it needs regular use over several days to build its effect. It is not a fast reliever.
Can I use the eye drops with contact lenses?
Remove soft lenses before using the drops and wait as advised before putting them back in, unless your clinician says otherwise.
Is it safe for children?
It is often used in children for allergic eye and nasal symptoms, but follow the label and a pharmacist's or doctor's guidance.
Can I use it alongside antihistamines?
It is often used together with other allergy treatments. Check with your pharmacist or doctor about your specific combination.
