Pyrantel Pamoate: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Reese's Pinworm Medicine, Combantrin, Pin-X.

Ces informations sont fournies à titre indicatif uniquement et ne constituent pas un avis médical. Consultez toujours un professionnel de santé qualifié pour toute préoccupation médicale personnelle. En cas d'urgence, appelez votre numéro d'urgence local.

What it is used for

  • Pinworm (threadworm) infection
  • Roundworm infection
  • Hookworm infection

How it works

Pyrantel paralyses the worms by locking up their muscles, so the still, paralysed worms lose their grip on the gut and are passed out naturally in the stool.

How it is taken

Taken as oral tablets, chewable tablets, or a liquid suspension, available over the counter in many countries. It can be taken with or without food, often as a single occasion that may be repeated after a couple of weeks. Take it exactly as the label, your doctor, or pharmacist directs.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Mild stomach upset or cramps
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite

Serious effects — get help

  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction such as facial swelling or breathing difficulty — seek emergency care
  • Severe or persistent vomiting — contact your clinician
  • Severe abdominal pain — contact your clinician

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Piperazine (another worm treatment — these work against each other and should not be combined)
  • Some medicines for myasthenia gravis

Who should take care

  • Tell your clinician about liver disease before use
  • For pinworm, treat household members and wash bedding and clothing to prevent reinfection
  • Inform your clinician if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Check the right amount for young children with a pharmacist
  • A repeat occasion after about two weeks is often advised for pinworm

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to repeat the dose?
For pinworm, a second occasion after about two weeks is often recommended to catch newly hatched worms, alongside good hygiene. Follow the label or your pharmacist's advice.
Should everyone at home take it?
Pinworm spreads easily, so treating the whole household and washing bedclothes reduces reinfection. Ask your pharmacist whether this applies to you.
Can I give it to my child?
It is commonly used in children, but the right amount depends on weight and age. Check with a pharmacist for young children.
Can I combine it with another worm medicine?
Do not combine it with piperazine, as they cancel each other out. Check with a pharmacist before mixing treatments.
Is Pyrantel Pamoate safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
