What it is used for

  • Prevention of invasive fungal infections in people with very weak immune systems
  • Treatment of serious fungal infections such as invasive aspergillosis
  • Fungal infections that have not responded to other antifungals

How it works

Posaconazole blocks an enzyme fungi need to build their cell membrane, stopping fungal growth and killing the fungus. It is a broad-spectrum antifungal used mainly to prevent or treat serious infections in people at high risk, such as those having intensive cancer treatment or transplants.

How it is taken

Comes as modified-release tablets, an oral liquid/suspension, and an injection given in hospital; the tablet and liquid are absorbed differently and are not interchangeable. The liquid is usually taken with food to aid absorption. Take it exactly as your specialist directs and attend the blood tests they arrange, as drug levels and liver function may be checked.
