What it is used for
- Impetigo
- Infected cuts, grazes and small wounds
- Bacterial skin infections (when prescribed)
- Clearing certain bacteria from the nose (when prescribed)
How it works
Mupirocin blocks bacteria from making the proteins they need to survive, stopping the infection from spreading and helping the skin heal.
How it is taken
Supplied as a skin ointment or cream and as a nasal ointment. Apply to the affected area exactly as your doctor or the label directs, usually after cleaning the skin. It is a prescription medicine in many countries, so use only the course your clinician has given and finish it as directed.

Common side effects
- Mild burning, stinging or itching at the site
- Dryness or redness of the treated skin
Serious effects — get help
- Severe or spreading skin reaction, blistering or swelling
- Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, widespread rash or difficulty breathing
- Persistent diarrhoea after use (rare)
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Other creams or ointments applied to the same area may dilute it; avoid mixing unless advised
Who should take care
- Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Do not use near the eyes, and avoid use over large open or burned areas unless directed
- Return to your clinician if the infection is not improving within a few days
- Use only for the infection it was prescribed for to help limit antibiotic resistance
