Simple self-care is effective for most viral sore throats. Drinking warm fluids, staying hydrated, gargling with warm salty water, and sucking on lozenges or hard sweets to keep the throat moist can all bring relief. Honey in a warm drink may soothe the throat in adults and children over one year.
Over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce throat pain and any fever when taken according to the label; a pharmacist can advise which is suitable for you. Throat sprays and medicated lozenges are also options.
Antibiotics do not help a viral sore throat. See a doctor if the sore throat is severe, lasts more than a week, or comes with high fever, swollen glands, or white patches, and seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
