Stopping early

What happens if I stop taking my medication early?

Stopping early can let your condition return or worsen, and for some medicines it can cause withdrawal effects or dangerous rebound symptoms. Never stop a regular medicine without first speaking to your doctor or pharmacist.

Many medicines control rather than cure a condition, so stopping them can allow the original problem to come back. With high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy and mental health conditions, stopping suddenly can lead to a flare-up or serious complications even if you feel fine while taking the medicine.

Some medicines must be reduced gradually rather than stopped outright. Certain antidepressants, steroids, blood pressure medicines and anti-seizure drugs can cause withdrawal symptoms or a sharp rebound in symptoms if stopped abruptly, which can be harmful.

If side effects, cost or simply feeling better make you want to stop, talk to your healthcare professional first. They can adjust the dose, switch the medicine or set up a safe tapering plan. Seek urgent care if stopping a medicine triggers severe symptoms such as chest pain, seizures or a rapid worsening of your condition.
