Constipation

How long is too long to go without a bowel movement?

Normal bowel habits range from three times a day to three times a week, so there is no single right number. Going noticeably less often than usual for you, with hard stools or discomfort, suggests constipation worth addressing.

There is wide normal variation in how often people open their bowels. What matters is a change from your own usual pattern, along with stools becoming hard, lumpy or hard to pass. Many people manage mild constipation with more fibre, fluids and activity.

Generally, if you have not had a bowel movement for several days and feel bloated, uncomfortable or unable to pass stool despite trying, it is reasonable to take action with diet, fluids and a short-term laxative from a pharmacist.

Seek medical advice if constipation is persistent, unexplained, or a new change in someone over 50. Seek urgent care or call your local emergency number if you cannot pass stool or wind at all and have severe abdominal pain, bloating, and vomiting, as this can indicate a bowel obstruction, which is a medical emergency.
