Does eating late at night cause weight gain?

Total calories matter more than timing, but late-night eating can lead to weight gain if it adds extra calories or involves high-calorie snacking.

Your body does not magically store night-time calories as fat simply because of the clock. Weight change is driven mainly by the balance between calories consumed and calories used over days and weeks. If your overall intake matches your needs, the timing of meals has a relatively small direct effect on weight.

The practical problem is that late eating often means extra, unplanned, calorie-dense snacks eaten while relaxing or tired, on top of the day's meals. Late heavy meals can also disturb sleep and worsen reflux, and poor sleep itself nudges appetite hormones toward overeating.

If evening eating is part of a controlled overall intake, it is usually fine. If you struggle with night snacking, look at whether you are eating enough earlier in the day. People with diabetes or acid reflux should pay particular attention to evening eating and may want to discuss timing with a doctor or dietitian.
