Vaccines

Do I need the pneumococcal vaccine?

The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for older adults, usually from age 65, and for younger people with certain chronic conditions or weakened immune systems. It protects against serious infections like pneumonia and meningitis.

Pneumococcal bacteria can cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and meningitis, which are most dangerous for the very young, older adults, and people with certain health problems. Vaccines markedly reduce the risk of severe disease.

Adults are usually offered the vaccine from around age 65. Younger adults and children may need it earlier if they have conditions such as chronic heart, lung, liver, or kidney disease, diabetes, a missing or non-functioning spleen, cochlear implants, or a weakened immune system. Some people receive more than one type of pneumococcal vaccine in a planned sequence.

Because schedules and product choices vary by age, risk, and country, the timing is best confirmed with a clinician. If you have a chronic condition or are approaching the recommended age, ask a doctor or pharmacist whether you are due and whether it can be given alongside your flu vaccine.
