Supplements

Can vitamin supplements replace a healthy diet?

No. Supplements cannot replace the full range of nutrients, fibre and beneficial compounds found in whole foods.

Whole foods provide vitamins and minerals alongside fibre, protein, healthy fats and thousands of plant compounds that work together in ways a pill cannot reproduce. Supplements typically contain isolated nutrients in fixed doses and miss most of this complexity, which is why diet quality consistently matters more than supplementation for long-term health.

Supplements are best seen as a way to fill a specific, identified gap, for example vitamin D in winter, B12 on a vegan diet, or folic acid before and in early pregnancy, rather than as insurance to make up for a poor diet. Relying on them instead of food can give false reassurance.

If your diet is restricted by choice, allergy, illness or budget, a targeted supplement can help, but the priority should still be improving the underlying diet where possible. A doctor or dietitian can help identify which, if any, supplements you actually need.
